What Makes Jurassic Park Special (And Where Jurassic World Went Wrong)

What is Jurassic Park? It is a cautionary tale of man playing God with genetics without the foresight of what they have done. It is as important a film then as it is now with GMOs in our food that leads to cancer and the sterility of our species. It is a film about the brutal force of nature in all forms that man cannot control.

What is Jurassic Park not? A film about dinos fighting dinos.

Jurassic Park is my Star Wars. It is perhaps the movie I have seen the most times. Lost World is perhaps the only book I have reread as many times as I have, and Jurassic Park was the beginning of Michael Crichton becoming my favourite author.

Let's go through the film to see what makes it special.

Movie Going Experience Gauges Society

Every has their horror story of going to the movie theater with rude people all around. I have had the occasional talking person behind me, and even some seat kickers. The stories I have heard from others are horrible, ranging from talking on cell phones to taking pictures of themselves with their cell phones while the movie is playing, to fights breaking out.

I have always been the one to not talk during a film, unless I had to ask a question of someone I was with concerning the movie's plot. One of the first films I remember seeing in a theater is Jurassic Park. By then I was around the age of ten. Today, there is a huge market for very young kids to go see movies, and by very young, I mean in the 3-4 range. There is plenty of blame to go around from the culture, to bad parenting, and to the movie industry itself who markets to these young children.

CGI vs Practical Effects Plus Jack the Giant Slayer Movie Review

Much like the government has had a slow creep into every facet of our lives, so has CGI had a slow creep into every shot on the big screen. CGI is not inherently bad, but at some point, the level of technology has not advanced to the point of replacing one medium for another. There are pros and cons to either side of the issue, and there are other factors involved with why CGI has become so prevalent. Today, preproduction is given about three months where in the past they were given as much as nine months. The same may be true for CGI where not enough time is given to digital artists to place the very nuanced details required to make a shot look real and believable.
